I Only Like Velvet In My Cupcakes

I remember being 5 years old and my mother prancing me around in velvet dresses on Christmas. It was tradition. Christmas meant family, presents and velvet. I had very hostile feelings about those dresses. Why? They were itchy, hot and unflattering. Yes, even as a child I was conscious of my attire and wasn't a fan of its bulky silhouette. After I was old enough to have a say in my wardrobe, velvet completely disappeared from my closet, and I was pretty certain I would never cross paths with that dreadful material again. Unfortunetly, someone decided that in the fall of 2009, velvet would make its triumphant return. Sigh.....well, here is a compilation of the different collections featuring velvet this fall.

George Costanza once said, "I would drape myself in velvet if it were socially acceptable." Well, now not only is it socially acceptable, it is also in style.

Spotlight: Jeremy Scott

I've always loved Jeremy Scott's designs. He doesn't take himself too seriously and clearly has a lot of fun with his unconventional prints and outrageous silhouettes. Sure, a lot of his looks aren't really wearable, such as most of the clothes in his Fall 2006 McDonald's inspired collection, but there are some pieces that I would definitely enjoy wearing. Some of his clients are Madonna, Bjork (not much of a shock), Kanye West and Lady Gaga. In Gaga's latest video "Paparazzi", she's wearing a yellow jumpsuit that Scott made especially for her and I remember thinking the first time I saw the video, "Oh, what an adorable Jeremy Scott jumpsuit!". He definitely has a look that is recognizable and uniquely his. Each collection has a theme, for example the Mickey Mouse theme that resonated throughout his Fall 2009 RTW collection. There is always an abundance of bright colors, there is always a child-like quality to the designs, and there is always drama. And don't think these whimsical creations are limited to just the ladies, he designs for men, as well!

OTK Boots

One of the absolute must-haves for this fall are over the knee boots. Either keep it casual with a pair of flat boots, like the Chloe tied leather pair that I've been drooling over. Or pair some high-heeled boots, like the black leather Alexander McQueen boots, with a mini-dress for a night out. They look amazing over jeans but that might prove difficult with the super-tight fit these seem to have. The Chloe pair are easily my favorite that I've seen but the Rodarte gray pair are a close second. They have made quite the buzz and have already sold out but that doesn't mean we can't admire them for the works of art they are. I just wonder how long it takes to get these bad boys on?

Ignore the Annoying Blonde

When I first saw Gucci's Fall 2009 RTW collection, I overlooked a leopard blazer that was recently brought back to my attention thanks to Glamour's Septemeber issue. Some blonde, who I will not refer to by name, is wearing the blazer on the cover and I think it's probably one of the most chic blazers I have ever seen. The sequins, the leapord print, the shortened sleeves; it's 80s rock and roll but with a modern, sophisticated cut. I absolutely love it and am thankful that Glamour decided to feature it on their September issue. I'm thinking the reason I didn't notice it the first time I saw it is that the lighting seems kind of off at the runway show. It looks much darker in the show than it does on the magazine. Either that or the blazer comes in more than one color. I'm not sure, either way, the runway show did not do it justice. I'm not a fan of the matching print suit and would never wear the pants with the jacket but the white tee and jeans combo complements it perfectly.

Total Madness

So I have a major midterm on wednesday. Needless to say, I haven't had much time to blog recently and am totally burnt out from studying 24/7, so I decided that I need to take a quick break from medicine and marvel at the magic that is Christian Louboutin shoes. The Fall 2009 collection has some amazing shoes, but my favorite by far are the shoes in the "Total Madness" collection. I saw Scarlett Johanson wearing the lace and gold "Bridgett Strass" shoes last week and haven't been able to stop thinking about them. (Yes, I literally daydream about shoes). And I've been on the search for a perfect pair of booties or ankle boots for the fall and the Nitoinimoi Bandage Ankle Boots are totally badass. And at just a few dollars shy of $1200, they're a steal!
